Camera Workshop - lesson 2

180 degree rule
- two characters should always have the same left and right relationship to each other

*This rule helps keep the viewer focused which avoids confusion. This is done as once a scene is set then the camera must stay on one side of the action.

If two people are facing each other you must stay within the line vision. The line usually is straight down the middle between two people like the picture above(left). Once the line of vision is established then the camera can move anywhere as long as it stays on same side of the line while filming.

If the camera goes past the line of vision then it will look like they have changed position. This is used while filming sports e.g. football.

This is a marking on the floor, which helps the actors know where to position themselves. As they will have get filmed several of times in order to for the shot to have different angles to build effect.
This is helpful when the director has to have serval shots for example one shot of a guy picking up tape (medium shot) and a shot of the hand picking up the tape (extreme close up)

Movie Trailers

This is the opening scene of the movie Shawshank Redemption (1994). This scene is known as an establishing shot which allows the audience to see where the scene is set. The camera angle is an high angle making the main character seem vulnerable and weak.
This shot is a close up, which allows the audience to clearly see the characters facial expression - it illustrates how frighten and shocked the protagonist is. To build on this effect they used a 'slow camera dolly in' to allow the audience to become more intimate with the character; this is done to help the audience empathise with the character more.

Therefore this allows the audience to clearly see what type of movie its going to be. The two scenes allows the audience to categorised this movie as a crime/drama as the opening scene is in a courtroom and the second scene illustrates him as confused.

This is Scarlett Johansen shooting down toward the enemies in Captain America The Winter Soldier (2014). This low angle here was used to place the audience in the same position as the enemies, therefore making her character appear stronger and more dominant.
In addition, the shot shows her falling backwards still shooting at the enemies, which also adds power to her character, as she is able to use her skill set in a dangerous situation.

This can be seen as a mid long shot which, allows the audience to see the Captain America posture as hefty and strong. This shows the audience two different emotions being displayed as the character with the gun is slightly panicked due to his body being all tensed up and while he is holding his gun very tightly. However the audience sympathies to the character with the gun as the audience is predict him getting beaten up due to how prepared Captain America looks.

Both these scene builds tension in the trailer, allowing the audience to expect this movie to contain a lot of action packed fanatics throughout the movie. Compared to the two other movies this is seen to be a very dramatic containing a lot of fanatic fight scenes.

The movie Hundred Foot Journey uses low vs high angle to demonstrate who is control of the situation of romance. This is well made as this plays with the audiences mind, as men are usually the ones prefer to be in control of the situation. The high angle plays out well as it creates a sense of empowerment towards her. The low angle shows a sense of innocence towards the guy, which may appeal to the audience of him being cute. It also allows the audience
to see it in the same perspective as the characters.

This over the shoulder shot allows the audience to see whom she is talking and we are able to see the emotions she is displaying when looking at him. This also helps establish the scene being set.

This scene extreme close up allows the audience to see what all the drama is all about. The fact that all the emphasis is an a asparagus illustrates how important food is in this movie.

This allows the audience to see this movie is about romance and love either towards this girl or about his passion of food. In comparison to the two other trailers this movie builds tension around small things you wouldn't normally panic about, making it a good family film.

In the romantic and action movies you start to notice that they use over the shoulder in order to portray the emotions the characters gives towards them. This is highly useful because it illustrates the relationship both the characters give each other. Extreme close up is often used in Dramas as it help over exaggerate the situation, as it exposes ever minor detail. However most action movies allow the characters seem in control of the situation by the use of a mid shot. This allows the audience to establish the characters body posture and his surrounding to establish the character is control of the scene.

Camera Workshop - Lesson 1

This is a Sony NX - 5 digital camera. This camera is easily portable and mountable. The Sony NX5 is able to record and shoot 720p.

The 3 most important things to get right with the camera is...

  • The focus
  • The exposure of light
  • The right colours

First to get the right focus you must zoom all the way into some thing very detailed and vary the focus in order to get the right focus. An Example would be zooming into someones eyes and and vary the focus until it becomes clear.

The get the right exposure of lights you must vary with the natural density filter (acts like sunglasses)

In order to get the right colour you must zoom into a white surface the press white balance this allows you to get as close representation of what your eyes see

The Hundred-Foot Journey

When the Hassan family was forced to move out from their native country India. Papa travels around the world in order to find a perfect place to relocate their restaurant. At last they find a hamlet in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in south France. Then Papa decides to open his restaurant named Maison Mumbai opposite the one Michelin star restaurant named Le Saule Pleureur. However Madam Mallory doesn’t open to competition too well. When Madame Mallory ignites a bitter feud that quickly escalates, the only hope for a peaceful resolution lies in Hassan's talent for French haute cuisine, and his growing affections for Mme. Mallory's pretty young sous chef Marguerite. Subsequently impressed by Hassan's undeniable culinary talents. Mallory agrees to become Hassan's mentor, in the process providing the perfect creative environment where his unique fusion cuisine can thrive. Lasse Hallström directs a film produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake. The main actors are Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal, Charlotte Le Bon.

The main reason why this movie is so uplifting is to do with how the audience makes a special connection with the characters, at the start of the movie. At the beginning of the movie the scene is set in India, this is where the Kadam family was cooking for locals in India. The atmosphere here is very joyful and uplifting as everyone seems to enjoying himself or herself creating a all round happy atmosphere. Until it gets all destroyed by people rioting due to their jealousy, which causes them to break and burn the restaurant/house of theirs. During this scene you see Kadam family losing their mother, as she got trapped in the fire. This automatically allows the audience to straight away make a connection to the family, as the audience feels guilty towards the Kadam family, as they are the victims.

The atmosphere throughout the movie is seen to be joyful, romantic and peaceful. This is due to having both restaurants trying to express themselves franticly. As the Le Saule Pleureur (French restaurant) bring a class and a majestic feeling towards it however the Mansion Mumbai (Indian restaurant) brings a very cultural Indian environment. This creates an ironic atmosphere, as they are complete opposites introducing a very comedic side towards it as they are so contrasting.

Towards the end you are able to read the characters like Manish Dayal emotions very clearly due to the nature responding to his emotions eg raining when he is sad. Hassan ends up making it to the top Paris restaurants, which is seen to be a huge achievement. After some time Hassan misses Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in south France. This allows the audience establishes he is homesick even without him even saying it. The movie ends with Hassan going back to Le Saule Pleureur in order to get his last Michelin star with them as he refuses to accept his third Michelin star. This is seen to be a bittersweet ending, making the ending uplifting towards the character and the audience.

How does Submerged create Tension - Link to Submerged video

This is the opening scene of the video Submerged. We see an oblivious blue light appear from the dark, which causes the audience to pay closer attention towards the situation as the audience are unsure of what the blue light is. Creating a tense atmosphere from the start of the thriller.

This scene illustrates how small and claustrophobic it is in the submarine, as everything is place close together. This allows the tension to build up as it creates a very isolated and tense inside the submarine as there is no signs of escape. Almost making them seem trapped under the water.

This scene makes the audience conscious of what of what they are going to find. The fact that the audience is searching in the dark creates a very tense atmosphere, as the audience doesn't not know what to expect.

Music - Throughout the trailer the musics pace starts to slowly build up, which leads to a massive crescendo. This helps build tension as  the audience is stimulates the human senses.

Techniques - The use of a cliff hanger allows the audience to use their own imagination, which builds tension as the situation might not be as bad as it seems.
