The Hundred-Foot Journey

When the Hassan family was forced to move out from their native country India. Papa travels around the world in order to find a perfect place to relocate their restaurant. At last they find a hamlet in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in south France. Then Papa decides to open his restaurant named Maison Mumbai opposite the one Michelin star restaurant named Le Saule Pleureur. However Madam Mallory doesn’t open to competition too well. When Madame Mallory ignites a bitter feud that quickly escalates, the only hope for a peaceful resolution lies in Hassan's talent for French haute cuisine, and his growing affections for Mme. Mallory's pretty young sous chef Marguerite. Subsequently impressed by Hassan's undeniable culinary talents. Mallory agrees to become Hassan's mentor, in the process providing the perfect creative environment where his unique fusion cuisine can thrive. Lasse Hallström directs a film produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake. The main actors are Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal, Charlotte Le Bon.

The main reason why this movie is so uplifting is to do with how the audience makes a special connection with the characters, at the start of the movie. At the beginning of the movie the scene is set in India, this is where the Kadam family was cooking for locals in India. The atmosphere here is very joyful and uplifting as everyone seems to enjoying himself or herself creating a all round happy atmosphere. Until it gets all destroyed by people rioting due to their jealousy, which causes them to break and burn the restaurant/house of theirs. During this scene you see Kadam family losing their mother, as she got trapped in the fire. This automatically allows the audience to straight away make a connection to the family, as the audience feels guilty towards the Kadam family, as they are the victims.

The atmosphere throughout the movie is seen to be joyful, romantic and peaceful. This is due to having both restaurants trying to express themselves franticly. As the Le Saule Pleureur (French restaurant) bring a class and a majestic feeling towards it however the Mansion Mumbai (Indian restaurant) brings a very cultural Indian environment. This creates an ironic atmosphere, as they are complete opposites introducing a very comedic side towards it as they are so contrasting.

Towards the end you are able to read the characters like Manish Dayal emotions very clearly due to the nature responding to his emotions eg raining when he is sad. Hassan ends up making it to the top Paris restaurants, which is seen to be a huge achievement. After some time Hassan misses Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in south France. This allows the audience establishes he is homesick even without him even saying it. The movie ends with Hassan going back to Le Saule Pleureur in order to get his last Michelin star with them as he refuses to accept his third Michelin star. This is seen to be a bittersweet ending, making the ending uplifting towards the character and the audience.
